Checking Your Ethernet Card
Getting Started Guide
113
From this interface, you can see the networking device that your Ethernet card is
attached to (generally eth0, or eth1 if you have two Ethernet cards).
1.
Use the Interface address field to enter the IP address of your com-
puter (or of this Ethernet card, if you have more than one).
2.
Check the accuracy of the Broadcast Address and Network Mask
fields.
Compare the values shown here with the values provided by your network
administrator.
3.
If you want the Ethernet card to be the default route for packets leav-
ing your system, choose the button next to Default Route so that it is
Enabled.
4.
Enter the IP address of the Default gateway.
If you haven’t enabled the default route, the gateway for this Ethernet card
is not enabled. This address indicates the address of the machine con-
nected to your LAN that routes the packet you send outside of the LAN.
5.
To make this interface active when you start your OpenLinux system,
choose the button next to the field Init at boot time so that it reads
Enabled.
For many users, this is all that is required to establish your Ethernet-based IP net-
working. Additional features include:
•
The ability to manage IP aliases from this dialog box. Use the New alias
button to bind another IP address to the same Ethernet card. These aliases
are indicated with a colon and alias number after the device name. For
example, the first IP alias is labeled eth0:0, the second is eth0:1, and so
forth.
